Health Information
๐ง Water & Food Safety
Never drink tap water โ use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. Ice in restaurants is generally fine (it's commercially made). Be cautious with raw salads and seafood from street stalls.
๐ฆ Mosquitoes & Dengue
Dengue fever is present throughout Thailand and has no vaccine โ DEET repellent is essential, especially at dawn and dusk.
๐ Malaria
Malaria risk is low in tourist areas but exists in forested border regions. Consult your doctor before departure about whether prophylaxis is recommended.
๐ Vaccinations
Recommended vaccines for Thailand typically include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus/Diphtheria, and Rabies (especially for outdoor activities). Check with your doctor at least 6 weeks before departure.
๐ถ Rabies
Thailand has stray dogs and monkeys in tourist areas. Avoid touching or feeding animals. If bitten or scratched, wash the wound immediately with soap and water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention urgently.
๐ฅ Medical Care
Bangkok has world-class private hospitals (Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital). In tourist areas, private clinics are widely available. Pharmacies (green cross) are everywhere and well-stocked.
Common Scams to Avoid
๐ต Jet ski / Motorbike Rentals
Alleged damage & inflated charges. Use reputable companies. Don't leave your passport. Take timestamped photos before & after.
๐บ "Temple is Closed" Tuk-Tuk Detour
Friendly strangers near major sights redirect you into a commission loop. Decline politely and walk away.
๐บ Bar Bill Shock / Menu Switch
Always confirm prices before ordering, especially drinks.
๐ Tuk-Tuk / Taxi / Longtail Boat
Always agree price before departure. Decline "scenic routes." Use Grab (Thai Uber) wherever possible.
Tips & Tricks
Download Grab or Bolt for taxis โ fairer than tuk-tuks for cities
ATMs charge ~180 THB per withdrawal โ withdraw larger amounts less often. Bangkok Bank often cheapest.
Heat is serious. Drink water constantly, especially on activity days. Electrolyte sachets at 7-Eleven are cheap.
Cover shoulders & knees for temples โ keep a light scarf in your bag
Wear slip-on shoes โ you'll remove them constantly at temples
DEET mosquito repellent is essential, especially at Cheow Lan Lake and Khao Sok
Nov 25th: Loy Krathong (floating lights) nationwide + Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai!
Say "mai phet" (not spicy) if needed โ default street food heat is intense
7-Eleven is everywhere โ great for snacks, water, SIM cards and emergency supplies
Activities to Avoid
๐ Elephant rides, bathing or feeding
Choose observational "no touch" sanctuaries only โ Elephant Nature Park is the gold standard.
๐ถ Orphanage tourism
"Volunteer with children" drop-in experiences are often exploitative and harmful to children.
๐ฏ Tiger temples & big-cat attractions
Captive big-cat experiences involve severe animal cruelty, regardless of how they're presented.
๐ "Long neck" hill tribe visits
Most are set up purely for tourist dollars and are exploitative of vulnerable communities.
